Created for the Berkeley Barb as anti–Vietnam War imagery, C.C. Rider depicts a skeletal motorcyclist surrounded by an American flag, rifle, missiles, medals, and other emblems of military power. Parkinson turns the heroic rider into an apparition of death, using grotesque satire to expose the violence concealed beneath patriotic spectacle. Like Gas Mask General, the visible instruction “Reduce 1⁄3” records the drawing’s preparation for reproduction and circulation through the underground press.
