Conceived as a scarf design for The Tempest, Juno’s Sacred Chariot draws upon the goddess’s appearance in the play’s masque, where she arrives to bless the union of Ferdinand and Miranda. Parkinson compresses Juno’s peacock-drawn chariot into a fluid, rust-colored emblem suited to repetition across silk. Such designs formed a recurring part of her illustrative practice and were often commissioned by theatrical institutions, most frequently the San Francisco Opera.
